New York Bans Indoor Public Vaping

October 23, 2017

In a regressive move that failed to take into account the harm reduction benefits of electronic cigarettes, their use will soon be banned from public indoor spaces in New York State.

Without citing any scientific data to back his move, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill today to ban vaping anywhere cigarettes are already prohibited, like workplaces, restaurants and bars. The ban goes into effect in 30 days.

The legal vehicle used to accomplish this was by amending Bill A516 to the Clean Indoor Air Act, a law originally meant to regulate the use of traditional cigarettes.

Expect serious court challenges to this move by advocates as well as the businesses affected.
